Biography

A painter and engraver. In Geneva from 1852 to 1856, he attended the studio of A. Calame, where he met Antonio Fontanesi. His subsequent adoption of realism led to his works being refused by the Promotrice in Turin in 1858 and 1859. A landscape painter of great sensitivity, from 1862 he worked with the painters of the Rivara group. In 1872 he bought the castle of Issogne, in the Valle d'Aosta, and restored it with A. D'Andrade. He bequeathed his collection to the Museo Civico in Turin, of which he was director from 1890 until his death.
