Biography

After studying at the Accademia in Florence, through Soffici he briefly took up Futurism. After the war, he created an artistic language of his own, in which he went back to fifteenth-century tradition and to Cézanne and popular art: this led to images that captured the "ingenuous" and rugged simplicity of lower-class Florence and of the Tuscan countryside, which from then on became his dominant theme. He contributed to Maccari's "Selvaggio". In 1942 he was appointed professor of Painting at the Accademia in Florence.
