Biography

A painter, he first took inspiration from Spadini in Rome and then, from 1917, from Picasso, with whom he became friends in Paris (working with him on scenes for "Parade"). He was one of the first to respond to the "rappel à l'ordre" that emerged in the post-war period, with works that emphasised the "quality" of painting, consciously taking inspiration from museum works, and drawing on post-Caravaggesque and nineteenth-century realism with strict formal definition. Close to the "Valori Plastici" magazine, he was a key figure in Roman circles in the inter-war years.
