Let’s Talk Sculpture

Catalogue of Acquisitions

Almost thirty years have gone by since the publication of the first catalogue of De Fornaris acquisitions, entitled Arte Moderna a Torino, edited by Rosanna Maggio Serra. Two subsequent volumes, published in 1993 and 1999, gave a detailed account of how our collection expanded, and they were followed by a fourth catalogue on acquisitions made between 1999 and 2006.

The Image of the Risorgimento in Painting and Photography

For the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy, Fondazione De Fornaris put on a series of meetings that examined the visual languages of the county during its difficult journey to nationhood and, in particular, the languages of painting and photography. The construction of a unified state was also brought about by young men, including many artists, who personally attempted to put their ideals into practice. Their activities took a number of forms: through their actions – by taking part in uprisings, fighting during the Wars of Independence – through participation in politics, or through painting, writing and promoting the ideals of patriotism and freedom.

The World of Design

Three meetings presented the world of design, in anticipation of 2008, when Italy was to become the World Design Capital. And they conveyed the true wealth of a phenomenon whose value is measured both in industrial terms and in its ability to provide authentic cultural inspiration. The world of design is a complex field, in which technique often encroaches on art, while production has to do both with aesthetics and with technology. But it is also a social phenomenon, because today it leads not only to objects but also to patterns of behaviour, processes and strategies.

When the Moderns look to the Ancients

How important were works by the Old Masters in museums for painters with a non-traditional vision, such as Filippo De Pisis, Giorgio Morandi and Carlo Carrà? How did the critics and the artists themselves talk about this interest? How did it redefine the concept of avant-garde, after the rejection declared in the early twentieth century in the Futurist slogan "let's burn the museums"?
